Tamil cinema (also referred to as the Cinema of Tamil Nadu, the Tamil film industry, or Chennai film industry) is the Chennai?based Tamil language filmmaking industry of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is based in the Kodambakkam district of Chennai, where several Tamil language feature films are produced, which has led to a colloquial reference to the district and industry as Kollywood, a portmanteau of the words Kodambakkam and Hollywood.

Dr. Stephen A. has gone beyond the traditional ways of looking at cinema and has designed a new paradigm for the futuristic study of Tamil cinema. The study has analyzed eight cultural elements that are relevant, dominant and sustaining Tamil cinema and proved that Tamil films have efficiently used them to connect the Tamil audience s core persona. In my opinion, this study is distinctive in introspecting the cultural themes and predicting the Futures of Tamil cinema. - S. Alex Parimalam, Asst. Professor, Department of Visual Communications, Loyola College, Chennai This research is an in-depth study on the underpinnings of Tamil Cinema and the never ending cultural themes that make impacts on Tamil society. A historic and futuristic critical analysis of Tamil Cinema in eight decades highlights various cultural themes that are recurrent. The author rightly examines the dynamics involved in constructing, deconstructing, reinforcing and popularizing certain cultural elements. The study on the Futures of the cultural themes is a unique contribution of this research. - Dr. I. Lourduraj, Director, Xavier Institute of Communications, Ranchi

Tamil Cinema and Dravidian Politics

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Tamil cinema has played a vital role in Dravidian politics in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Films have been influential in Indian politics since the days of the British Raj, when movies were used for anti-British propaganda. Nevertheless, the leaders of the Indian National Congress viewed movie media with contempt. It was the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a Dravidian party, that made extensive use of this media for propaganda purposes. Adversaries of Dravidian parties despised the use of films and screen popularity for political gain, and Congress leaders like K. Kamaraj questioned the possibility of movie stars forming governments.

Tamil identity in cinema during war and conflict

This book studies the representation of identity politics in the Indian Tamil film Kannathil Muthamittal, which deals with the Sri Lankan ethnic conflict. Drawing on the influential role of cinema in politics on the Indian subcontinent, and the perceived shared identity of the Tamil communities in Sri Lanka and India, the book researches the film in relation to the conflict. It discusses the differences in conception of the Indian Tamil identity and the Sri Lankan Tamil identity (in the film), and argues that the Indian Tamil is represented as politically and culturally superior and more empowered than the Sri Lankan Tamil. Using existing literature on identity formation and the socio-cultural history of Tamil identities of Sri Lanka and India as a reference point, the representation of the two Tamil identities in the film are analysed.
