Cinema is a multifaceted cultural industry. It was in the twentieth century a new art form and it has evolved out into a full-fledged industry in the present century. It has surprisingly survived in a site where digital delivery and multi-platform consumption thrive. The Aesthetics of Cinema looks into the changing concepts of cinema. The semiotics of resistance, a study of the third cinema forms a core chapter in the book. Punk and Action cinema is given due importance. Neo-feminist cinema and the horror genre are also covered.

Childhood, Cinema and Film Aesthetics

Next to love and death, childhood is one of the universal topics of cinema. Films determine the view on childhood and allow children to present themselves – differently than in other media. Films convey an experience of childhood and can present us with the perspective of child figures. Films are also an expression of childhood memories: of those who make films and of those who watch films as children and are influenced by them. This book focuses on the relationship between cinema and childhood with regard to the aesthetics, mediality and cultural history of film. It presents a variety of current positions on three main topics: child figures in film, childhood as the spectators’ experience and the role of childhood in the production process. The topic of childhood figures broaches the question what images are constructed by children and childhood in films, as well as the question of how children as actors embody and shape film figures. As to the question of childhood as spectator’s experience the articles included in this volume discuss films conveying the perception and experience of children. This also includes film theories referring to the gaze of the child. The question of the role of childhood in the production process takes us to those producing films. How do adult filmmakers refer to the experience of childhood – as biographic memory or as an aesthetic strategy of play? The contributions cover a wide range of interdisciplinary perspectives, such as film theory, psychoanalysis, health science, film production. They deal with a kaleidoscope of films from the beginnings of film history to the present – experimental, documentary and fictional. The contributors: Alejandro Bachmann, Alain Bergala, Christian Bonah, Joël Danet, Bettina Henzler, Vicky Lebeau, Karen Lury, Matthias Müller, Daniel Wiegand

Japanese Cinema Between Frames
88,98 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

This book explores the rich complexity of Japan's film history by tracing how cinema has been continually reshaped through its dynamic engagement within a shifting media ecology. Focusing on techniques that draw attention to the interval between frames on the filmstrip, something that is generally obscured in narrative film, Lee uncovers a chief mechanism by which, from its earliest period, the medium has capitalized on its materiality to instantiate its contemporaneity. In doing so, cinema has bound itself tightly with adjacent visual forms such as anime and manga to redefine itself across its history of interaction with new media, including television, video, and digital formats. Japanese Cinema Between Frames is a bold examination of Japanese film aesthetics that reframes the nation's cinema history, illuminating processes that have both contributed to the unique texture of Japanese films and yoked the nation's cinema to the global sphere of film history.

The Child in Contemporary Latin American Cinema
103,80 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

What is the child for Latin American cinema? This book aims to answer that question, tracing the common tendencies of the representation of the child in the cinema of Latin American countries, showing the place of the child in the movements, genres and styles that have defined that cinema, and devoting sustained attention to representational trends and themes surrounding the child-figure characterising the period from the late 1990s to the 2010s, as well as to the experiments with film aesthetics precipitated by the child-figure, and the narrative and stylistic techniques at play in the creation of the child's perspective. The book's chapters look in detail at films from the recent and contemporary period, focussing on topics such as the death of the child in 'street child' films, the role of the child in post-dictatorship filmmaking, and the use of child characters to challenge gender and sexual ideologies. The book as a whole also aims to place those analyses in a historical context, examining in particular the child's figuring in the mid-century movements of melodrama and the New Latin American Cinema.

Redefining a New Cinema

Chinese cinema has developed over decades along a chain of generations shaped by rapid changes in the topography of history, politics, society, culture, and film aesthetics. A new generation of Chinese filmmakers emerged in the early 1990s, with audacious experiments and innovations attempted to defy the conventions of filmmaking and cinematic language. The controversial image of Chinese independent films has been defined, redefined, shaped, and reshaped over the last twenty years. This comprehensive book covers the history of Chinese independent films from the early 1990s to the present and provides a new perspective on the textual analysis of contemporary Chinese films. Tonghong Cai explores five kinds of text, including historical and sociocultural, cinematic, narrative, musical, and parodic text, and discusses the features of the writerly text which contribute to the new-generation films'avant-garde nature and their position as a new cinema. This book is a good reference source for scholars and readers who are interested in contemporary Chinese cinema, film narrative, popular music and postmodernism.
